More about the Categories

People, Places and Things in Brushford

Let your photographic or artistic imagination flourish and celebrate the essence – and beauty – of Brushford, capturing village life and beautiful surroundings.

People are endlessly fascinating – capture them in Brushford, indoors or outdoors – just make sure you have obtained all necessary permissions from any person featured in a picture or photograph.

Show us the beauty of wildlife and plants in their natural environment: beautiful pictures of plant, insects, birds and creatures found wild in the garden or further afield. Subjects can be close up details or wider views of wildlife enjoying the outside environment.

If a thing’s man-made, beautiful and in Brushford, we’d like to see it, whether it’s large or small.

Brushford Fantasies

Let your imagination, originality and creativity go wild – submissions can be a close-up of a subject or an abstract view. Image manipulation of photos and graphic approaches are also welcomed. We want to be wowed by amazing pictures that challenge and make us think.

Photo taken with a mobile phone

Not everyone has access to a high spec camera but most of us can use a mobile phone. You can be inspired by either of our other categories but you can only use a mobile phone.

Under 18s (age 11-17)

Any photographs or art work depicting something Brushford related that interests you.

Under 11s

Any photographs or art work depicting something Brushford related that interests you.

Entries on private accounts cannot be seen and therefore will not be judged.

Ethics

Digital adjustments that maintain the integrity of the image are allowed.

An image will be rejected if in the opinion of the judges it appears that the image has been taken in such a way that coronavirus restrictions, wildlife law or animal welfare requirements may have been breached; protected species or habitats have been compromised; or the image has been otherwise taken in an irresponsible manner.

Judging

A panel of judges will be appointed by Brushford Parish Hall to select a shortlist of entries from all categories.

The competition judges will then choose from the selected shortlisted entries, to select winners of each category, an overall winner who will be chosen from the three adult category winners (People, Places and Things in Brushford, Brushford Fantasies, Taken with a mobile phone) and an overall winner from each of the two children’s categories (Under 18s and Under 11s).

In addition, second and third places will be awarded; and where considered appropriate by judges ‘highly commended’ and ‘commended.’

Judges hold the right to move entries to another category.

The judges reserve the right not to make any award if, in their opinion, none of the entries meet the required standard.

The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Winners

The overall ‘Winner of the Brushford Parish Hall Photographic Competition 2020’ will be chosen from the three adult single image category winners (this excludes the two children’s categories) and will receive both category and overall winner prizes. The winners of each single image category will be chosen from the shortlisted entries.

A ‘Brushford Young Photographer of the Year 2020’ winners will be chosen from each of the two children’s categories: from Under 18s (11-17) and Under 11s.

The overall ‘Winner of the Brushford Parish Hall Art Competition 2020’ will be chosen from the three adult single image category winners (this excludes the two children’s categories) and will receive both category and overall winner prizes. The winners of each single image category will be chosen from the shortlisted entries.

A ‘Brushford Young Artist of the Year 2020’ winner will be chosen from each of the two children’s categories: from Under 18s (11-17) and Under 11s.

The winners will be announced during a Brushford Parish Hall Show in autumn 2020, or when permitted by government regulations.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded to winners of each category and to the ‘best in show’ ‘Winner of the Brushford Parish Hall Photographic Competition 2020’ and ‘Winner of the Brushford Parish Hall Art Competition 2020’.

Second and third places will also win prizes in each category.

The prizes are non-transferable.

The Brushford Parish Hall reserves the right not to make any award if, in the judges’ opinion, none of the entries meets the required standard.

The prizes must be claimed within one year of the competition winners being announced or will be forfeited.
